If you want to know what our editors are eyeing (and buying) for fall, you’re looking right at it: Joseph Altuzarra’s first-ever collection of handbags. We aren’t afraid to admit that we have been reduced to ooing and awing at these saddlebags and hobos, simply because they capture everything we love about the fall 2015 season—the right colors, the right hold-everything size, the right amount of extra oomph thanks to intricately-knotted tassels and ropes.
That’s why we featured the launch of the line not once, but twice in our October issue, now on newsstands and available for digital download. Altuzarra himself told us he is thrilled to extend his cool-girl runway vision into the form of carryalls. “Designing ready-to-wear and clothes is the same in that each really reflects the Altuzarra attitude, and they’re designed with the same woman in mind,” he said. “However, it’s different in that you have to think about the function hand-in-hand with the form of the bag; one is linked to the other, so the function is much more intricately built into the design process.” For function, he inserted magnetic snap closures, interior slip pockets, and a section that zips (you know, for the private stuff).

Even with function as a priority, Altuzarra filled his debut bags with impressive details that feel one of a kind. “I was inspired by the bullropes used by bull riders for the rope details, while the hardware was inspired by vintage cigarette lighters from France,” he explained. (Fun fact: The ropes are made with a leather-braiding technique that takes six weeks to complete.) “These bags were really an amalgamation of French and American inspirations, which is very much inherently Altuzarra.” Yet, he offset the giddyap styling with a strategic use of calming colors, like camel, taupe, black, and slate blue. “These tints are versatile for any wardrobe,” he says. “It’s a must-have for transitional weather.” These are must-haves for our wish list, that’s for sure.
